Studio practice Unit 1

This is the first piece I made for the group crit in October 2017. It is made from several cardboard boxes which are collaged and painted with acrylic.

This is one of three cardboard boxes that I papered and painted. I liked the surface for painting and the way they could be hung in corners. I might return to this idea later on but not the way the paint is applied.

This is a large walll piece (approx. 1.5m x 1.5m) made from cardboard boxes glued together and collaged and painted with acrylic paint. I hung it with small panel pins so it could be transported in sections on the train.

In these two paintings on plywood offcuts my concern to describe the warehouse shape overrides more of an exploration of materials and isn't working. (30x22cm)

Here I am trying to find ways to make things stand up with minimal intervention. I could use it for larger pieces later. The cardboard piece is similar to the last one but I like the emphasis on the joins and fitting odd bits together like a patchwork.

These are drawings made on the walls in the old bus garage site (now closed off). Working there and generally being in the space and then collecting lots of materials from there definitely helped the next stage of work - I then began putting together the different things and became interested in the juxtapositions and jostling of the different textures.

Here is evidence of my botched together joins, but overall the work now feels much more collaged and is going more in the direction I want, focusing on details of meeting points of different materials that don't necessarily sit easily next to each other.

I am happier with these three small pieces above, they reference the soft, unpredictable nature of the various materials and relate to the disorder of the site and the making process was tactile and messy. each approx. 20x20cm

I am not sure about the stripes as they maybe echo the blobby painting of earlier work.Though I do think they are referenced from something more specific and could still evolve. I am making them in a way to suggest the plastic hazard tape used on demolition and building sites and I like them as a marker. I might use to take in for the assessment as they are very light and easy to carry.
